TJ's fourth grade class hasn't had any luck convincing Ms. Perry to let them have a pet. But somehow, Livvy changed her mind! Livvy gets to pick the pet and she's decided on a goldfish—AGAIN! Ethan's tired of being a bottom-feeder and decides to get the entire class to freeze Livvy out. Although TJ doesn't want a fish either, he knows it's not right to ignore Livvy. But if he talks to her, the class will freeze him out, too. Is it time for TJ Trapper to zap the bully out of his best friend? Aligned to Common Core Standards and correlated to state standards. Gr 2-5-In these early chapter books, TJ Trapper learns how to deal with several different types of bullying situations, including social, cyber, silent treatment, and more. In each case, he seeks advice from his well-intentioned but misinformed babysitter, his high-school-guidance-counselor father, and his friends. TJ is able to successfully deal with most bullies, but in one realistic case, he is unable to be friends with a bully who refuses to admit he was wrong. TJ is an engaging and down-to-earth character surrounded by a full cast of well-developed supporting figures. Kids will relate to the stories and the black-and-white cartoon illustrations. Each book outlines all of the steps to follow so that children can resolve the issues on their own, as well as what to do when those steps don't work. Helpful terms, definitions, and further resources are included.-Terry Ann Lawler, Burton Barr Library, Phoenix, AZ

Fourth-grader TJ Trapper zaps bullying by being an "upstander" and reporting bullying to adults. TJ's father, a school guidance counselor, helps TJ identify and solve bullying behaviors. These four chapter books address cyberbullying, the silent treatment, name-calling, and rumor mills. Though their story lines and dialogue are quite preachy, the easy-to-read books do tackle difficult subjects in an approachable way.
