What is grief? Where does it come from? Will I ever be OK again?

Grief. It is a normal, natural response to loss. Everyone experiences it in different ways. You can't avoid it. Grief can be hard to understand and difficult to talk about.

Dr. Lora-Ellen McKinney, a psychologist who has worked with children experiencing grief, answers the big questions that surround feelings of loss. This engaging handbook looks at grief from many different angles, examining how it influences our emotions and relationships, our brains and bodies, and our behavior. Preteen readers will get to know when and why we are most likely to grieve, what purpose grief serves, and strategies for healing and finding hope moving forward.

Grades 4-6 In this accessible and comprehensive handbook, McKinney, a psychologist who's worked with children experiencing grief, normalizes reactions to loss. An essential first chapter explains who feels grief at some point (everyone!), why it seems so hard to talk about, and the importance of finding "grief navigators" like friends, counselors, doctors, and spiritual leaders. This section also establishes such metaphors as grief as tumbleweeds and our reactions as bricks or walls, which extend throughout the direct, conversational text. Building on this foundation are chapters on what causes grief; the physiology of grief and how it affects our minds, bodies, and lives; and the stages of grief. In the process, the author raises valuable, real-life questions like "What is the best way to grieve?", "Is it OK to still have fun?", and "Will you ever be OK again?" Her final chapter offers age-appropriate strategies for managing grief, and suggests when a trained professional might be helpful. Colorful illustrations featuring individuals with various skin colors, hair styles, physical abilities, and religions further emphasize the universality of grief.

Gr 2-7-An engaging and nuanced exploration of grief that takes readers far beyond the expected platitudes. Empathy, compassion, and hope characterize the impact of grief on the physical, mental, and emotional health of young people. This book does not shy away from difficult conversations while conveying a message of positivity emphasizing that, with support and perseverance, readers can successfully work through their emotions. Multiple creative depictions of grief, such as an uninvited guest and as complicated math problems that can be solved when broken down into small parts, invigorate and facilitate the discussion. McKinney conducts an inclusive and wide-ranging exploration of the relationship between grief and traumatic events, such as climate change, school shootings, and police brutality, in a way that is unique and memorable. Therapeutic support, including spirituality and mindfulness, are given equal weight as relevant strategies, in addition to the importance of family, friends, professionals, and spiritual leaders. Beautiful, bright, and cheerful illustrations inclusive of race, religion, and ability complement and enhance the book's message. The illustrations also provide an engaging visualization of grief in conjunction with the text that will motivate young adults to better internalize the information. Most importantly, readers are encouraged to harness their power through the book's message that young people can manage grief through self-compassion, self-management, and support from family and community. VERDICT A fantastic book makes a complex subject relatable and engaging for tweens of all reading levels.-Margaret Auguste
