"I highly recommend this book as a Christmas gift for any YA fiction fanatic in your life—whatever age they might be. For fans of Japanese history, adventure, and action, this book is a sure fit. I'm glad I got the chance to read it, and I hope to see more of David Matthews and the characters around him. —PaperDroids.com"|It's time for Revenge.
Benjamin Martin, author of the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award semi-finalist Samurai Awakening, returns with another masterpiece of young adult fiction and the next installment in his riveting shapeshifter saga.
American teenager David Matthews has more to deal with than the average exchange student living in Japan—a lot more. In Samurai Awakening, David woke one morning to discover that he'd been empowered and possessed by the tiger god Kou. Now a Jitsugen Samurai in Revenge of the Akuma Clan and able to take on Kou's form, David must use his new abilities to protect Japan from the terrifying evil creeping across the land—and waiting for him to fail.
As his relationships, especially with Rie his host sister, grow uncertain, he must forge deeper connections with Kou, the tiger god that resides with him, and form new alliances if he hopes to hold back the return of Japan's ancient enemies. It is up to David to stop the powerful and vengeful Akuma Clan—and time is running out.

Gr 7 Up-This sequel to Samurai Awakening (Tuttle, 2012) continues the story of an American exchange student turned mystical warrior with the power to save Japan. The plot picks up from the first volume with minimal reintroduction as the story expands to include new allies. The villains from book one are back, and as the title implies, they're seeking vengeance; it's up to David and his friends to save the day again. The writing here is more polished than in the previous volume; it will be an enjoyable choice for readers who accepted the premise of an American teenager chosen to be Japan's savior. However, those who find the general concept problematic will want to steer clear as the plot becomes increasingly unbelievable with an outlandish twist in the third act. Japanese dialogue is interspersed throughout broadens and deepens the realistic depiction of Japanese school life and culture. David experiences his first Japanese class trip at the beginning of the book, providing an enjoyable look at off-the-beaten-track scenes of Kyushu. Though the pace is leisurely at first, it leads to an action-packed conclusion that paves the way for a third book. In this sequel to Samurai Awakening, blond-haired, blue-eyed American exchange student David Matthews, possessed by a powerful god, continues his quest to save Japan, because without him, "Japan is defenseless." The problematic, overly complicated plot is made even harder to read by awkward writing, copious typos, and distracting errors in punctuation and grammar.
