Divided into sections on development, key herbs, other plants, and more, this reference from herbalist and healer Chevallier provides an overview of uses, cultivation, and more for 500-plus plants. Highlights include growing and building an herbal first aid kit, the history of herbal medicine development, and in-depth analysis on key medicinal plants (cultivation, history, uses, and preparations). Entries reference self-help uses for plants, where available. Sections on plants are organized by scientific name. The historical development information is arranged by region, and the medicinal uses segment is laid out first by plant life cycle, then by potential problem groupings. Beautiful full-color pictures and a solid index will help readers use the text to their advantage. The general index contains both plant names and symptoms. More specific indexes, such as the index of herbs by ailment, will guide readers to specifics. VERDICT Though this selection should not be used as a medical reference on its own, it goes into enough depth for average readers looking for home remedies.--Dawn Lowe-Wincentsen, Oregon Inst. of Technology, Portland
