Sonya Turgenev Portinari, having liberated Izmoroz, goes in search of three older rangers of Marzanna--but she only finds one, who tells her that perhaps the goddess' interests do not align with her own. Then she returns to Gogoleth and is driven out by her allies, the Uaine, who have finally declared they're not leaving Izmoroz until they decide it's time. She flees with her friend Jorge to his family's home in Ra�z. Meanwhile, her brother Sebastian arrives in Magna Alto, learns that his mentor and former commanding officer is considered a traitor, and is reassigned to what should be a rebuilding mission. Of course, that doesn't last, and when the empire needs his magic for destruction, they don't hesitate to use it. While Sonya and Sebastian learn painful lessons about convenient alliances and who can be trusted, Galina Odoyevtseva--frustrated with the failures of the noble council--foments revolution among the populace. The many threads, including the consequences of a dangerous alliance, prove entertaining; there are plenty of possibilities for the next volume of the Goddess War series (which started with The Ranger of Marzanna, 2020).
