From celebrated comic artist Mike Mignola and award-winning novelist Christopher Golden comes a work of gothic storytelling like no other. Reminiscent of the illustrated tales of old, here is a lyrical, atmospheric novel of the paranormal—and a chilling allegory for the nature of war.
“Why do dead men rise up to torment the living?” Captain Henry Baltimore asks the malevolent winged creature. The vampire shakes its head. “It was you called us. All of you, with your war. The roar of your cannons shook us from our quiet graves…. You killers. You berserkers…. You will never be rid of us now.”
When Lord Henry Baltimore awakens the wrath of a vampire on the hellish battlefields of World War I, the world is forever changed. For a virulent plague has been unleashed—a plague that even death cannot end.
Now the lone soldier in an eternal struggle against darkness, Baltimore summons three old friends to a lonely inn—men whose travels and fantastical experiences incline them to fully believe in the evil that is devouring the soul of mankind.
As the men await their old friend, they share their tales of terror and misadventure, and contemplate what part they will play in Baltimore’s timeless battle. Before the night is through, they will learn what is required to banish the plague—and the creature who named Baltimore his nemesis—once and for all.

Mignola (Hellboy) and Golden (Road of Bones) team up to create a rollicking, monster-filled World War I adventure. In 1914 a gravely wounded British soldier, Lord Henry Baltimore, encounters a vampire on the battlefield. Baltimore fights back and survives, but the vampire unleashes a vampiric plague that destroys Baltimore's life and threatens the world. As the plague burns through Europe, Baltimore summons three of his closest friends to him. While waiting for Baltimore to arrive, the three men share supernatural experiences, all while the evil that Baltimore has fought for so long closes in. Those who know Mignola's Hellboy comics will recognize how the story uses various monsters of folklore, but it also gloriously utilizes tropes from two-fisted pulp adventures. Colin Mace's voicework, which brings this fun cast of characters to life, and Golden's and Mignola's combined storytelling talents immerse listeners in a world that evokes the slow terrors of Poe and Hawthorne as much as the superhero action of Hellboy. VERDICT Hellboy fans will love this story, which also provides a great introduction to the tragic hero Lord Baltimore, whose only purpose in life is to battle what lurks in the dark.--James Gardner

Europe’s Great War has collapsed in the face of plague and an infestation of vampires in this spinoff of a prose novel by Hellboy creator Mignola and genre vet Golden. The obsessive Lord Baltimore, the one-legged scourge of the undead, is joined on his quest by the gypsy Vanessa Kalderas; she soon learns that it was none other than Baltimore himself who set the calamity in motion when he gravely wounded the vampire Haigus in a previous encounter. Now the cursed Baltimore seeks endlessly for Haigus, hoping to bring an end to the horrors preying on the world and those who travel with him must fear death or worse. Mignola’s decayed, doomed Europe is gloomy even for a supernatural apocalypse. Although Baltimore seems immune to death, Lord Baltimore’s loved ones are not so lucky, and it is an imprudent companion who stays with him for any length of time. Longtime Mignola fans will find this work meets their no doubt high expectations, while those encountering Mignola for the first time will find this an enticing introduction to his oeuvre.
