I might have to visit a very sick friend,
or rescue a sinking canoe,
but I will always, always, always come back to you!

What happens when someone you love heads out the door? When a mother goes out to work and her daughter stays behind, Mom reassures her child that nothing can keep her from coming back home again. Mom promises that she would even ride on a whale or fight off a passel of bears, if that's what it takes to return to her child! Her daughter might have to wait with Gramma or a friend at home. Whether their time apart has been long or short, the family will be together again.

This humorous and touching book reminds young readers that distance cannot diminish love. Perfect for children struggling with separation anxiety or a change in family life, this book represents a parent’s promise that they will be back, no matter what! Reassuring rhyme and amusing illustrations create a story to cherish when loved ones have gone away—and also when they’ve come back at last.

Young readers get the reassurance they need to deal with a caregiver's comings and goings. The rhyming verses describe the various reasons an adult may have to venture out into the world without their child. The outings range from the everyday and humdrum--such as going to work and running to the store--to the implausible and ludicrous, like scaring off a band of pirates with kung fu moves and going for a ride on a whale's back. No matter how far the adult wanders, the child can be certain of their repeated promise: "I'll always, always, ALWAYS come back to you." Although the illustrations depict an unnamed young girl and her mom, who both have tan skin, the narration feels universal--the speaker could be any adult who plays a supportive role in a child's life. Zong's lively, expressive gouache artwork shows the girl (who appears forlorn whenever her mother is absent) being cared for by a revolving door of reliable babysitters and depicts a confident, determined, and energetic single mother. Children will enjoy following the little family's pets--a cat and a dog---who serve as the girl's cute sidekicks and mirror her emotions. Although the fantastical scenarios are amusing, they can also be seen as metaphorical, capturing the often Herculean nature of parenthood. (This book was reviewed digitally.) A touching picture book that addresses separation anxiety with heart, humor, and heroic flair. (Picture book. 3-5)

Preschool-Grade 1 This humorous and touching book speaks to children with working mommies. Leaving home for work is only temporary, and the mom in this story reassures her daughter that her departure is only a brief moment. The mother's wildly imaginative descriptions of her work as a postal worker unfold as she assuages her daughter's heartfelt separation anxiety: "I might have to trudge up a mountain," "rescue a sinking canoe," or "ride on a whale and get wet," the mom says, ending her adventures with the comforting refrain, "But I'll always, always, ALWAYS come back to you." The busy mom's inventive narratives comically line up with her morning as she multitasks her way through a frenzied routine. The rhythmic lines complemented by the sometimes silly illustrations nicely explore the anxiety or sadness children might experience upon separating from a loving guardian. The book also highlights a nurturing process of easing these worries with playful affection while simultaneously building a positive image of working mothers.

PreS-Gr 2-In this clever and humorous picture book, a mother lovingly reassures her daughter that no matter where she goes, she will always return. As a mother gets ready for work and hurriedly makes breakfast, her daughter looks worriedly on, anticipating the moment they will be separated. Using wild and astonishing examples, the parent seeks to comfort her daughter-whether it's visiting a sick friend or riding on a whale or fighting off bears, she will always come back. She assures the little girl that no matter who watches over her-a babysitter or relative-the child will be safe, even if she is a little bored until they can be reunited. The colorful and lively illustrations convey the rush of the mother's life as she readies for work as a mail carrier, depicting her in the imaginative situations she shares with her daughter. As the daughter grows sad, the room darkens until her mother finally returns. Short sentences and fun situations make this an excellent read-aloud and story time selection, with repetitive phrases reinforcing the message. VERDICT A solid choice for exploring the topic of separation and temporary absence of a parent or caregiver, recommended for all libraries.-Selenia Paz
